Just noticed that a web version of AIM instant messenger is now built into the Gmail.
Just click on ‘Options’ when you are logged into Gmail and then select the login with AIM link. After you signup, your AIM friends appear next to your Gmail contacts.
This feature is only rolled out to US users of Gmail but if you switch your language preference within settings to English (US) then the feature should be enabled and you’re ready to go!

That’s a great idea. I don’t like the official client for most of the chat networks and would much prefer to stick with gmail.
Having your chats saved and available to search is another bonus.
I’ve just realised though, that i’ve never used chat in Google apps for domains, I don’t seem to have the same options link as in the screenshot.
Maybe it’s just slower in rolling out these new features…

I would imagine that G will eventually roll out this feature to all Gmail users.
It’s pretty cool they are supporting AIM. MSN and Yahoo hooked up a while back in order to integrate their instant messengers. It won’t be long now ’till we see a cross IM universe….or we could just go on using GaIM/Adium.
