Integrated site search on Google

March 9th, 2008 by Cormac Moylan · 2 Comments

search within google

Google have just added a search box in the snippets area for high authority sites. The box conducts a google search for keywords on the website and returns the results within Google using the ’site’ operator.

It’s not clear what the requirement is to have this added to your site’s snippet. High ranking sites which already have snippets, such as SourceForge and Wikipedia, have this feature but other sites which have snippets, such as the Irish Webmaster Forum, don’t.

Matt Cutts recently said in a video post that the snippets are completely algorithm and are outside human interaction. There is no doubt that the addition of the search box is also based on a ranking algorithm but knowing the minimum requirement would still be nice!

“This feature will now occur when we detect a high probability that a user wants more refined search results within a specific site.”

How exactly, it’s not clear. PHP does have one search box too, and they do not use google search, nor adwords (at least not on the mirrors I’m using.)

So not just google site search, not just users using the site: operator, and not just adwords. How do you detect search-prone content?
