Is your Gmail A/C secure?

April 12th, 2007 by Cormac Moylan · 5 Comments

Dave, the Irish Developer, blogged recently about some strange going ons with his Gmail account…

I believe my Google Account was just hacked tonight. My Thunderbird was prompting me for my password saying it was invalid. So I tried to log into my Google Account, and after 5 tries the password went through and I was into my account. But when I went to change my password the following email address was in my secondary email address field angelic_luv_u@yahoo.co.uk

I have logged into my Gmail account without any problems and I checked my secondary email contact. Everything is fine on my end.

Hopefully this is just an isolated incident or something but to be on the safe side you should check your your own account settings. I wasn’t too sure what I had entered as my secondary email address. I also forgot what security question I entered. Both of these settings have been updated.

Follow the steps below to change Gmail’s alternative email address and to update your security question:

1. Log in to your account.
2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Open the Accounts tab.
4. Click Google Account settings.
5. Select Change security question along the left side of the page.
6. Enter or change the email address in the Secondary email field, and select Save.
7. Close the Google Account window using your browser’s Close button if you don’t want to sign out of Gmail just yet.
