I have long been mulling over placing adverts on my blog. The only adverts I have implemented so far have been google ads via adsense in the single page view of posts. I have also added a referal link in the footer to my webhost, Blacknight.
I’m not a big fan of in-your-face ads so as a consquence the adverts I’ll be introducing over the coming weeks should be blended into posts and be somewhat unobtrusive. I have taken inspiration from two sources, a blogpost from Lorelle about wordpress monetization - Monetizing WordPress Plugins - while Michele’s recently launched blog - Monetise.it - will also provide a point of reference for my attempts to churn out some cash from my blog.
I’m going to keep faith with Google Adsense for the next couple of months, and so where best to start than with a Adsense plugin for placing ads between paragraphs. You can see this plugin working above in this post. The plugin requires you to edit adsense.php with your google adsense code and then to upload it your plugins folder, followed by clicking activate within the admin panel. The plugin adds a quicktag to the editor above the write post textbox. If you wish to add a block of adsense between paragraphs simply click the quicktag icon.
This plugin was released in 2005 but it still works with the current release of Wordpress. The only stumbling block is its inability to work if you have the rich text editor enabled. To disable the rich text editor, login to your admin panel, go to users, your profile and uncheck the box for rich text editor. The downside of this plugin is that it only displays a fixed adsense block. I currently have a banner selected to display between my paragraphs but there is no way I can change the plugin to display a Google referal without having to alter the adsense plugin’s code within the adsense.php file. Besides from that it, it does what it is meant to do without any hassle.

I tried the Adsense Deluxe yesterday.
It totally f*cked up Wordpress, to the point where I couldn’t edit posts. It seemed to screw up TinyMce. Even disabling the plugin, and restoring all the file mods didn’t fix it. Luckily I had a backup.
It may have been something I did, but be warned!

Hi Richardo,
I always do a backup of my wordpress blog before installing any plugins. I learnt the hard way
I have a testing blog too for “exotic” plugins.
Did you try disabling the rich text editor before disabling the plugin?

“Did you try disabling the rich text editor before disabling the plugin?
Frankly I was in a hurry for various reasons, and I’m not sure I checked that. It could have been the cause?

It might have been. But if it flubbered up your ability to edit posts too, then it might not be related. I must install that plugin on Michele’s recommendations. If i get it working i will let you know.
