My Oxegen 2008 Wishlist

July 4th, 2008 by Cormac Moylan · 8 Comments

Oxegen-02The stage times for Oxegen were announced a few days ago. It’s unfortunate that a lot of the bands I would want to see are clashing but that was always going to be the case. It looks like I won’t be seeing anything of Black Kids, Friendly Fires, Interpol or Tricky. Shame.

Friday Night is probably the best night for Rock with Editors, Interpol and Kings of Leon all playing on the Main Stage. I’ll be taking a slight detour to the Dance Stage to take a look at UNKLE doing his thing live (hopefully live). Can’t wait for that performance.

Saturday is the ‘avoid the main stage at all costs’ night. REM, Stereophonics, The Verve, Amy Winehouse, Counting Crows, Bowling for Soup and Scouting for Girls will all be strutting their stuff on centre court! Eh, no thanks.

Saturday is the Techno night for me with The Japanese Popstars, Michael Mayer, Slam, Boyz Noise and Justice on show. Saturday also has the best alternative indie lineup with Hot Chip, Echo & The Bunnymen, My Morning Jacket, The Enemy, Vampire Weekend, British Sea Power, Ting Tings, Black Kids and Alphabeat all performing.

Sunday is a tough one for me. I need to choose between Rosin Murphy (who I love) and The Racounteurs (who are supposedly unreal live). A decision also needs to be made between Rage Against The Machine (YES!) and The Chemical Brothers (I am yet to see them live!).

The Dance Stage on Sunday night is very poor in my eyes. Cheesy euro dance DJ David Guetta is headlining. Boo!

There are some great acts on show throughout the entire weekend, however I have one complaint, not a single Hip-Hop act! Where are Common, De La Soul, Jurassic 5?

Below is a rough time line thingy of the acts I am hoping to catch.

Friday Night
19.30 - Deus - The O2 Stage
20.25 - Editors - Main Stage
22.00 - UNKLE - Dance Stage
23.30 - Kings of Leon - Main Stage

Saturday
14.30 - Japanese Popstars - Dance Stage
16.10 - My Morning Jacket - Pet Sounds
17.45 - Michael Mayer - Dance Stage
18.35 - Vampire Weekend - Green Room
19.45 - Echo & The Bunnymen - Green Room
19.45 - Slam - Dance Stage
20.15 - Alphabeat - 2FM New Band Stage
21.45 - Boyz Noise - Dance Tent
22.15 - Hot Chip - Pet Sounds
23.45 - Justice - Dance Tent

Sunday
13.30 - Subways - The O2 Stage
15.30 - Radio Slave - Dance Stage
17.30 - Carl Craig - Dance Stage
21.00 - Racounteurs - The O2 Stage
21.15 - Roisin Murphy - Pet Sounds
22.30 - Chemical Brothers - The O2 Stage
22.35 - Rage Against The Machine - Main Stage

I couldn’t agree more about Saturday night’s main stage. Little sad really but it’s WELL made up for elsewhere.

Unkle are/is savage live. Only saw the live band set at EP last year but was really good.

You seriously don’t want to miss Boys Noize. Saw him at the Trinity ball a couple of months back and he was AMAZING.

JUSTICE are who I bought my ticket for.

Saw The Racounteurs at an intimate gig in San Diego and they were indeed AMAZING. I wouldn’t miss em.

Hopefully we’ll get to meet up during the day at some stage ;)

The Saturday main stage is like 1998 all over again. What’s going on like?

The Boyz Noise stuff on Youtube looks great. There aren’t many great bands on after 9 on Saturday so that night is geared for Dance only. Which is lucky because the Friday and Sunday night in the dance tent aren’t too impressive. Sunday night is a right cheesestring of an evening.

We’re heading up on Thursday, I presume you’re going on Friday? I’ll give you a buzz about meeting up for UNKLE on Friday night.

Exactly. There’s an absolutely savage Boys Noize remix of the Justice tune “phantom II” here:

I really REALLY hoping that JUSTICE and Boys Noize do something together, even for a track or two.

Yea, not heading down until Friday afternoon. Friday night, MSTRKRFT … seriously, really REALLY good. That’s going to kick the festival off for me. Went to see SoulWax last bank holiday then to SPY to see MSTRKRFT and Soulwax did a surprise gig after them. Best weekend ever :)

I’ll drop you my number on IM and we’ll organize something.

I’m only going on Friday. Us old people simply can’t hack the pace anymore.

    19:30 - Deus
    20:25 - Editors
    21:55 - Interpol
Then either Kings of Leon or Groove Armada at 23:30

Friday is catering for a specific crowd alright. The no nonsense rockers.

I’d prefer if Kings of Leon and Interpol switched because then Interpol wouldn’t clash with UNKLE. Saw KOL and Interpol late last year and I much preferred Interpol’s set.

    Cheers for the link, Dave.

Looking forward to a few myself. Editors, the enemy, Kings of leon, Rage!, the subways….. its a long list and i wish half of the bands i like didnt clash and i also wish that i could go and see a lot of the acts that i’ve heard are good but havent actually had time to check them out. I know this sounds lame at this stage but i randomly went to see the thrills at Witness about 6 years ago even though id never even heard of them and they were absolutely brilliant!

The gloss around The Thrills has worn out a bit since! Thank Christ. I love how The Subways are on at 1.30 on Sunday. Nice way to start the morning.

I’m going to send you on some My Morning Jacket stuff. This is their Off The Record video, it’s a bit MOTR for them but catchy. They’re going to rock it out big time
