I finished up my previous system admin role at the Bank of New York at the end of July. I had a good time working there but I wanted to do something more challenging. I moved back home to Cork and began my search for a position in development.
I focused on a lot of Internet Marketing based roles as that’s what I’m most interested in doing. Unfortunately there aren’t that many positions available in Online Marketing within Ireland. I applied for a good few roles, I heard back from some, heard nothing from most, had a single interview and I was called for another interview last week (which I choose not to attend).
Early last week I began to broaden my search for employment. I started looking at Business Analyst roles and the like. I was called for an interview with Apple in Cork, which I’m sure would have been very interesting, but I turned down the interview because I was offered a job pretty much out of the blue by a start-up based in Dublin.
Just over a month ago I posted about signing up to Facebook. This article has strangely brought me some good luck. Firstly, I was contacted by a journalist from the Irish Independent who was writing a piece about Facebook’s popularity in Ireland (managed to get my mug in the papers!) and secondly, I was contacted by the Director of a Dublin based social network who were looking to hire a Product Developer for their yet to be released website. The Director sent me an email asking if I would be interested in being interviewed for a position, I said yes, and I was offered the position on the day of the interview.
You never know who might stumble across your site from Google!
The product I’m helping to develop is a very interesting concept and is gaining a lot of attention from those who are being contacted about supporting it. It’s in closed beta at the moment but once it goes to live beta, I will have a few invites to send out. I’ll post about that later (Oct/Nov).
So now I’m back in sunny Dublin, looking for a place to live again. When I was last living here, I must have looked at approximately 40 places to live. August is a bad time to start work in Dublin

Cheers Dave.
This first week has been pretty cool. It’s great to have finally got into development. I’m going to learn a lot more in this role than what I could do in any IT position.
And it’s all bout’ the learning.

Congratulations on the new job Cormac. That wasn’t you I saw walking beside Grand Canal Dock at about 6.30pm on Tuesday night? I saw your mug shuffling by me and I thought “Nah… couldn’t be…”

Ken, that would be me alright. Good spot. I’m living just off Baggot Street for the mean time. I’m staying in the bosses old house till I find somewhere permanent. It’s a nice little place in D4
Robin, can’t say much about the site as I signed a non-disclosure agreement but the site is going to do for charities and non-profit organistations what myspace has done for bands. It’s a real worth while cause.

Looking forward to hearing about it as well. Dublin is a hard place to escape from sometimes.
So far I have done reasonably well (having moved up to Leitrim about 18 months ago), but each time I go down to Dublin I have the intention of only staying there for a day or two and I often get sucked in for the best part of a week.
The fact that my girlfriend lives there is probably something to do with it..
