Daft.ie - Are you a gay friendly male seeking an apartment in Dublin?

March 21st, 2007 by Cormac Moylan · 10 Comments

Then Daft.ie is for you.

I have been trying for the past two months to find a nice apartment/house in and around Dublin City. It seems that if I was a gay male, or a gay friendly male, or a gay friendly gay male who likes cats then I would have shacked up, er i mean found, a place to live a long time ago.

This one took the biscuit today…

The views from all of the windows are stunning. The apartment is seconds away from the Jervis Centre and you can be in Temple Bar in less than 5 minutes (yes we have timed it). We’re looking for one gay friendly male or female professional non-smoker (no couples please) who is easy going, clean, and responsible. You’ll be sharing with a pro…

And this one….

Double room for one person with private bathroom in a two bedroom appartment. Fully furnished. Cable and Broadband. To share with gay Spanish guy. Must be tidy and clean. No Spanish speakers as would like to practice English

There was another which actually had the line ‘gay professional male’, and a horror of a line a few weeks back which requested ‘one boy to share a room with another boy’ (those are the exact words).

It’s not all gay men who are house hunting on daft. Last week I nearly replied to a request for two Polish women to share a bed in Rathmines. They even included a picture of the bed!

Now before the bashing starts, I would just like to point out that I don’t have a problem with gay people at all but for christ sakes like…what does it matter if you’re gay, or if you have cats. I find it terrible that someone would leave a lovely place slip thru their hands just because of a gay flatmate.

My search continues….

Imagine the outrage if someone posted an ad for someone that was non-gay.

Best of luck with the hunt.

Cheers Gavin, it’s fairly tiring looking at places. Takes up about 2 hours a day of my time to look at 2 places in the one evening. :(

I’m going to wait till I find the right spot, i’m in no rush..

The best is when it says “..beautiful studio apartment, over looking wide open space…”, translation “..tiny bedsit, over looking a 24 hour car park..” :D

But the best of luck to you!

I must have seen 20 places in the past month and more than half have been lies. Steer clear of words like spacious and cosy.

Today i saw one that said ‘house is decorated to the owners own personal taste’ :)
Crikey, pictures of cats everywhere so and a few garden gnomes i’d imagine. I was half tempted to ring them up!!

It matters because, if you’re gay, it can be extremely uncomfortable living with a homophobic person, hence ‘gay friendly’. ‘Gay friendly’ is really just a euphemism for ‘not a bigot’.

    Totally,
I didn’t reply to any of those ads, not beacause I’m homophobic, but because I didn’t see it as an issue if a flatmate was gay or not. My logic might be a weird odd but that’s how I am.

I didn’t want to be in a situtation where the person interviewing me was trying to tell if I was gay friendly, a bigot or putting on a act just to get the house share. If I get on a with a person, then I get on with them. Simple as that.

But I understand what you mean. Some people are ignorant as hell and nobody should have live with ignorance.

We are not living in world were everyone can get on with other people yes, there is people out there who don’t care if you are gay are not, but there is still people who are, I have shared with people before and they had issues with me being gay so i can understand why someone would want to put that on an Add. i once went to view an apartment, all straight, i told the girl that was showing me round that I was gay, she replied we don’t like mad parties here, she immediately had it in her head that bacause I was gay I was going to have mad parties and orgies. So totally undestand why the add specifies this.
