Going back to School, Moving to Cork and Leaving Work

July 29th, 2008 by Cormac Moylan · 17 Comments

I have decided to return to third level education to do a Masters in Business Information Systems at UCC in good ol’ Cork. The course is a mixture of Business and IT. Core subjects include Information Systems, Project Management and IS Consultancy Processes. Apparently the country is in a bit of a recession so maybe now is a good time to work on my qualifications.

The single year Masters doesn’t start until the end of September but I will be leaving my work at ammado this week so that I can focus on working on a few personal projects in the interim.

I wish my colleagues all the best for the future. There is a very talented team of guys and gals there and I have no doubt they will achieve success.

It will no doubt be a shock to the system to be without a fixed income living the student life again but hopefully I’ll manage! The biggest obstacle is moving back into the family home full-time for the first time in about seven years!!

    Cheers Anthony.

Matt, all the courses I have done and I haven’t studied the course I actually wanted to do when I was in secondary school - History & Archaeology. I can see myself doing it too, not any day soon though..

Best of look with getting back into the college groove, Cormac. I’ll admit the thought had crossed my mind in the past, just on those days where you’d really miss the Waterford life!

Cork should be right craic all the same though, fair play.

Cheers Ken. I’m looking forward to the whopping 18 hours of lectures a week. Tough times :)

The only thing I am not looking forward is the fact that they teach a .NET module for some mad reason. Why? :(

Great choice in doing the BIS Cormac. When it comes to the IT industry its always good to strengthen the qualifications.

Best of luck with the move but I’m sure you’ll be grand. :-)

Going back to college is far from easy!

Moving back with the folks will indeed be quite the culture shock, almost as much as not having cash.

    And I’m sure you’ll have a hoot.

moving back with the folks is tough. But I’m sure a bunch of Cork bloggers will “help”

  • 14 Cormac Moylan // Jul 29, 2008 at 11:01 pm

  • 15 smemon // Jul 31, 2008 at 3:17 pm

All the best with the move back to UCC / Cork and in with the parents. As everyone said, it’s not going to be easy, but at least you can have a bit of fun while you are doing it ;)

I just did that course!! It’s not so bad… It also depends on what kinda group you get put into, but I guess that is the same as real life and you just gotta work with what ya got!

Best of luck with it! :-)
