Matt Cutts has contributed another video on Google SEO. In it he desists the elements which make up a SERP Snippet.
In the video, Matt discussed the #1 search result for the term “Starbucks”.

I think Starbucks was a soft choice of topic for Matt to dissect for his snippet examination. This is because their page is mostly flash and contains zero paragraphs of text. Because of that it was a 99% certainty that Google would take the meta description rather than use on page text. I would prefer to see how Google displays the description of a page when that page is very text heavy.
It was pretty interesting to hear how Google checks on DMOZ for page descriptions though. I wonder if they also check the Yahoo Directory?
(PS: Apologies for the screenshot, I don’t have PS on this computer)

Thanks for sharing, Cormac.
BTW, ImageAuthor.com comes in handy when you find yourself without PS.

I had to stop watching the video because that crackling is worse than the sound of a baby crying
I did get as far as where he DID actually mention that snips are sometimes taken from text in the page. I think from doing 1000+ searches a day that is pretty obvious for longer tail search terms.
Regarding DMOZ, I believe that the Google directory is sort of like their “cache” of descriptions in that case.

That crackling noise drove me nuts. You expect a little more quality from Google’s staff.
Anyhow, thanks for sharing Cormac.

yeah the video seems a little half rushed out all right and you would think that with a name like google giving a video tutorial out with its workers they could have done a bit better. Have to agree with you the whole Star Bucks site they could have picked a better site with more text and description, maybe they got a brown envolope to say Star Bucks as much as they can which wouldn’t surprise me in the least LOL
