Hi, my name is Cormac and this is my blog. On the web circa July 2006.

Show time! Microsoft Vista installation is on the clock

March 26th, 2007 by Cormac Moylan · 7 Comments

Time to get things rolling. My installation of Vista begins now…

21.30 - Popped DVD into drive while XP is booted up just to take a look at the Promo Screens.
21.32 - After waiting for the autorun file to kick in I open up My Computer to automatically launch the relative .exe
21.33 - System Crashes - I reboot the PC

Things aren’t off to a good start. The DVD is spinning but it’s not going anywhere…

21.40 - DVD is still in the drive. PC is set to boot from the CD Drive but the PC loads normally and launches XP (Vista CD is still spinning in drive)

Okay, so for some reason the Vista installation didn’t automatically go through on first shout.

21.42 - XP loads up, but no sign of any Vista installation screens. I load up My Computer to try and run the install from within XP
21.43 - XP crashes

Stop the clock. 13 minutes. And that’s it. I’m finished for the night.

I have to say my first impressions of Vista are fairly poor. :-)

The application which checks if Vista is suitable for my machine gave me the all clear. It even did a quick update before it fully launched. So why did it fail to mention that your CD Drive isn’t suitable for Vista? (I’m guessing that that is the only problem). Vista has it is knockers and I was dying to find out if the words of despair were true or not. I guess I might never know.

Okay, so I have a technical issue with my installation, I’ll check the manual. Did Microsoft provide me with a manual for Vista? - Nope. Did they provide any documentation on Vista? - Nope. What did they provide in the brown bag? Well, I got 4 CDs and a peice of paper which says:

Please find enclosed your personal copies of Windows Vista Ultimate Edition and 2007 Office Professional…..yadda yadda yadda
For inforamtion please log onto www.microsoft.ie/windwosvista & www.microsoft.ie/office

Fantastic. Thanks for the support guys. I’m off to play with my iMac. I’ll worry about this another day, when I have some patience and a whole day free to read up on fixes.

I have never bothered registering with the counter, but check all the comments I’ve put up :) Ubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu, and possibly a few Debian, although I don’t tend to use my desktop at home much anymore :)

I’m hoping to pick up a laptop in the coming weeks and it’s a toss up between a Macbook and a Sony. If I choose the Sony I’ll more than likely throw Ubuntu on it. I miss it :(
