Last week while in Cork, I ordered a coffee in a restaurant. The waitress asked if I wanted white or black coffee. I said I wanted white coffee and of course I added a thank you to my order because I’m a courteous guy.
When I order a white coffee I expect a coffee with some milk in a acompaning milk jar. That’s what I would define a white coffee as.
What did I get? I got a large mug with frothed milk and coca powder sprinkling things on top of the frothed milk. That’s not a white coffee, right? Surely that’s a moko-choko-latte or something?
I think next time I’m ordering a coffee I’ll take the Larry David approach…’Gimmie, that vanilla bullshit’

Welcome to the modern world, Cormac. This is the world of Starbucks and Americanisation. This is the world where it is all lattes and cappuccinos and mochas and other words that I can’t spell or pronounce [let alone, drink].
It confuses them if you ask for coffee. Black or white. They’ve never heard of it.
Do as I do - order a black coffee [that usually gets a funny look for a start] and then ask for milk.

You cant even order a tea nowadays with out them asking what kind. What ever happened to getting what you asked for in this country?

I don’t think I have ever ordered a tea while in a resturant. I’m a lot more fussy about tea, I like it in a very specific way.
Grandad, I was wondering if I should have said black or white. It’s a complicated ol’ world

Black. Then ask for the milk jug. Otherwise they’ll give you that horrible fluffy stuff.
I only drink coffee when I’m out.
I only drink tea when I’m at home.
Weird.

What does having the sizes in a different language actually achieve in Starbucks et al? I try to make a point of always asking for a small, medium, or large, unless I’m in a country where the language isn’t English.

Well, it’s not just starbucks that are guilty. Ask for a white coffee in Nero, Costa, Eat or most chain outfits and that’s what you get. Coffee with frothed milk added.
Really, it’s only in restaurants and hotels these days that you get a black coffee with a milk jug or maybe a splash of cream.

Totally agree.

Strange! I’ve never had any problem with coffee shops. There again, I won’t go to a Starbucks or any other franchised outlet. They are a heap of ****.
My village coffee shop has milk and sugar on all the tables. The same with all the coffee shops in the local town.
