Chris is after sending on a link to a website which displays words ending in ‘ie’. IE, in case you don’t know is the .tld for the Irish domain space. This of course opens up the opportunity to make some clever domain hacks.
Interesting hackable .ie domains include:
- sport
- boob
- lou
- smoot
- veg
- zomb
- trick
- girl
- dogg
Blacknight are offering .ie domains for €25 this week only so if you see something that might interest you then why not splash out?
Ever since del.ic.io.us popped up a few years back domain hacks have been gathering momentum. As you can see the folk behind delicious simply registered the domain icio.us but added a clever subdomain to create a unique domain identity (check out other words ending in us). It’s a very cute domain name but it’s not as obvious as it should be. What I mean by that is that when you first read it you’re not sure of how to say it. It doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as it should. The subdomain for del is fine but you could easily get stuck at pronouncing icio which will result in a minor head scratch. Luckily for delicious they had a great product to boot and eventually they received domain recognition.
Foot.ie is a popular Irish domain hack and Michele recently enough purchased Monetise from the Italian Domain Registry which resulted in Monetise.it. Two other interesting .tld extensions include .fm and .tv. But finding words ending in those letters is a bit tricky, however their extensions provide an excellent accessory if your website is targeting media such as television and radio. I inquired about a .fm domain late last year and I was quoted approx €100 to complete the registration, quite expensive so it’s not something to take lightly if you think you have a good idea for a domain/website. It’s probably best in that instance to do a similar thing as what audioscrobbler.com did once they received a bit of fame….transfer their business to a less weird domain and use a relative domain extension, last.fm was born.

Nice collection of hackables there.
I think the .se domain hack is becoming more and more popular too.

Yup, verbo.se is one that i’m aware of anyway.
Thanks for the link to that ‘words ending in’ webpage. That’s going to come in very handy.

I thought that extensions like .tv (does anyone have redlemonade.tk?) get less ‘respect’ from search engines?

A tld’s age seems to play a part in the weight on the domain alright. There aren’t that many .eu/info/biz/fm/tv domains ranking high.
If it’s not .com/net then it isn’t worth much to be honest.
