My most recent post discussed the inclusion of spammy links to the default download of Vanilla, an Open Source forum client.
A public outcry wasn’t far behind and now the links have been completely removed from the download. Horrah for people power!
Matt Mullenweg, Wordpress founder, came in for some abuse from Techcrunch and others after he made his opinions known about Vanilla’s venture to the dark side. A few years ago he made a similar mistake as Mark (lussumo) did and placed link ads on all the wordpress.org blogs. Matt realised his mistake and tried to convince Mark against going down this route. He even went so far as to donate $1,000 to help the project. That’s very generous, especially when you consider that Vanilla is a chief competitor to Matt’s own forum client, BBPress.
Kudos to Mark for realising his mistake and kudos to Matt for donating to a rival Open Source project

To my shame, I hadn’t heard of Vanilla until reading this post. I have been developing themes for BBPress, but I think I might port these over to Vanilla now

Hi Mathew,
Are any of your themed BBPress skins online? I’d be interested in seeing them.
