Last night I received an invite to Yahoo’s new social network Mash. The concept is nothing new. It’s Yahoo’s version of MySpace/Bebo/Facebook.
The one pretty interesting thing about Mash is the way in which you invite your friends. It’s fairly clever actually! Instead of me sending you an email with a link to create your profile, I send you a link to your profile which I have already setup for you. I can fill in some juicy things in your about me page, list your interests, add some modules and generally run-a-muck on your personal page before handing the reigns over to your good self. Once you click on the invitation link I loose control over your profile and you left to clean up the mess. Pretty clever eh.
Besides from that everything else about Mash is fairly standard. Mash is invite only at this moment so if you want an invite; drop me a comment and I’ll send one on.

Interesting concept with the invites, but does anyone else think this will open up whole new opportunities for cyber bullies?
Say Jim doesn’t like Fergus because Fergus sits at the front of the class and answers all the teacher’s questions with a smug smile on his swotty face, so Jim decides to create a Mash profile for Fergus in which he makes assumptions about his classmate’s sexual orientation and penchant for self-pleasure?
What then, people? What then?

Well, I guess Fergus is just going to have to suck it up!!
I don’t think the profile goes live until the invitee accepts the link but yeah, it does open Pandora’s box a bit . If all I could do was simply create a profile for you and not edit it, then that would at least prevent any bully stuff.
