Does Web 2.0 design make you feel ill?

November 22nd, 2007 by Cormac Moylan · 17 Comments

Is it just me or does looking at a website full of gradients, reflections, glares and diagonal lines tire out your eyes as well?

I get wreck tired from looking at web 2.0 designed sites. There is too much activity for my liking. I find myself loosing focus after a couple of seconds if the designer has gone over board.

On a plus point, it’s nice to notice the grunge design becoming more popular.

Yeah, I feel the same. I think web design is slowly swinging back around though, we are seeing more and more minimalist bauhaus-style designs popping up.

This should temporarily cure your nausea.

Nice one for the link, Dave. I came across a load of similarly styled websites to the one you linked to a while back but couldn’t remember from which site it came from.

While I agree a lot of web 2.0 design is mad I don’t think grunge is the answer. Most grunge sites have tons of design elements that have no functional, structural or even informative value.

It’s all down to the designer and his attempts at the end of the day. He can structure his grunge design around the content to make it more legible in the same way which a designer using web 2.0 effects could do….if they are any good at their job.

Personally I find the darker feel of grunge easier on the eye than the bright 2.0 look.

Partially agree. For text heavy sites white on black isn’t a good idea if your audience is older than say 18. Us old foggies find black text on white easier over longer paragraphs. :)

Sadly rich design doesn’t seem to mean anything when it comes to popularity. MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, delicious, Google etc. are all very simply, and in some cases god awfully, designed.

PlentyOfFish.com is probably the most successful dating site on the net but it looks like a monkey with FrontPage designed it.

Yip, absolutely. Am guilty of the odd gradient meself but try to keep that sort of thing to a minimum. I love the grungy look when it’s done well - not just a grungy font sitting on a web 2.0 design, but with lots of grunge elements adding up to the overall design. And while these elements may not be seem to have an informative value, they do have a role which might be as simple (or as important) as appealing to a certain audience.

I recently wrote a post on this topic with a few links to “distressed” style websites on them…

I think web 2.0 is trying to proove that simplicity and quality is more important than heavy graphics websites.
Saying that many web designer do go OTT.

Many think that web 2.0 is about keeping tables away from design and convert to divs, but while divs do have their advantages, in some cases tables are a must (tubular data).

Nice one. I was looking for that guy’s blog ages ago. I tried searching for him using ‘Matt, blog, pink, grunge, computer games’ but flopped at the results :(

    Danke for the linkage.
