It seems very unprofessional for Continuum or Hosting365 or whoever it was that put that message up there to have done so. If your client hasn’t paid you, you sort it out with them privately or through legal means if necessary. You don’t air your dirty laundry in public and you certainly don’t try to humiliate your clients publicly.

That is quite a funny thing to see though, and potentially it’s something that wasn’t getting settled by any other means (and maybe legal means just seemed a much bigger pain in the ass than publicly humiliating someone).
I know I’ve gotten a very quick response from some companies by blogging about bad service or slow response.
I very nearly wrote a very long blog post about Esat BT there a while back after they had really really gone too far in their incompetence.

It’s certainly not the right way to go around your business alright.
There is no need to tell everyone visiting the page that the site is offline due to non-payment. A simple ‘this site is currently unavailable’ message would suffice.

http://www.pcwb.ie is up and running. It’s strange they haven’t got some info up for the sales though.

A disproportionate number of Irish businesses are late payers. Other businesses have to “finance” those who refuse to pay on time.
You may not think it’s professional to put up that page, but I don’t think it’s professional not to pay your bills.

I agree with Michele. Presumably they followed reasonable procedures to get paid and it didn’t work. I’ve taken client sites offline for this kind of behaviour. This very quickly bumps you up in their list of priorities and bank transfers start coming in fast.

Eoghan,
Have any of your clients dropped you over issues with payments and the like?
8 Michele // Dec 28, 2007 at 8:42 pm
@Eoghan: with some people it’s the only language they seem to understand

@Cormac: Strange question, but no. Although I have dropped a few clients myself for being slow payers!

Wow, I was surprised to see that message…
Certainly to the point. I’ll reserve judgement on whether it’s a valid course of action
