‘One Click’ solution to Wordpress Theme and Plugin Installations

One Click

Anirudh Sanjeev has developed a very interesting add-on for Wordpress.

OneClick is a Wordpress Plugin+Firefox Extension combo which will change the way you look at wordpress forever. It reduces the effort needed to install a plugin or a theme for Wordpress to just one simple click.

OneClick enables bloggers to install either a theme or plugin to their Wordpress blog via a single click.

The features of OneClick include the ability to:

  • Install any plugin/theme from the zip file on your hard drive.
  • Install any plugin/theme from any URL of the zip file.
  • perform easy maintenance and upgrades.
  • automatically checks for updates, and installs updates itself, if required.
  • Auto diagnostics wether everything is working properly.

The download files for both Firefox and the Wordpress plugin are available from Anirudh’s site. You’ll need to pay attention to the installation instructions, which are also available at his site. The Firefox plugin needs to be configured slightly so that it uploads any plugins/themes to the correct blog path on your server.

When you right click on a plugin/theme within Firefox you are presented with the option to install using OneClick. OneClick automagically uploads the plugin/theme to the desired directory on your web server without you having to download, unzip, and upload the plugin/theme. Once the process is complete, you are re-directed to the OneClick administrative page within Wordpress. OneClick correctly stops short of activating the plugin for you. This last step must be completed manually.

Security wise, you must have your login details saved within Firefox’s form information for OneClick to function properly. The plugin uses port 80 to upload the files as it does not require FTP authentication. OneClick more than likely uses the built in file upload feature in Wordpress.

I have installed this plugin to test it out. I have successfully installed two plugins from OneClick without any notable issues but I’m not comfortable with leaving this potential back door open. The plugin is very much in its infancy and as a result it doesn’t give me piece of mind to have it activated.

In saying that, it’s a very useful plugin for those who aren’t familiar with uploading files via FTP or those who aren’t technologically ‘with it’.
